High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA)

South Dakota was designated in 1996 as part of a high intensity drug trafficking area, along with the states of North Dakota, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas, and Missouri, qualifying for federal funding to specifically target methamphetamine.

In 2000, the HIDTA program was expanded to include all drugs, while still maintaining an emphasis on methamphetamine.

Two teams of East River and West River agents are trained and equipped by HIDTA as first responders to
potential methamphetamine laboratories.

HIDTA agents work with two HIDTA analysts who perform both intelligence and statistical analysis.

There were 352 HIDTA/Meth arrests in South Dakota in 2000.
