National Incident-Based Reporting System (NIBRS)

South Dakota participates in NIBRS, the newest crime reporting program maintained by the FBI.

NIBRS reporting uses computer technology and an expanded database to collect details about the offenses, victims, offenders, property, and arrests involved in each crime incident. In addition to gathering data on more crimes, NIBRS also gathers more data such as locations of offenses; time of offenses; relationships between victims and offenders; etc.

Growing numbers of South Dakota law enforcement agencies are participating. NIBRS data will become a powerful law enforcement tool by providing more detailed, meaningful, and timely information about criminal activities than has been available in the past.

South Dakota was NIBRS certified by the FBI in early 2001.
